    General curiosity here...

I just finished watching Minami-ke Okawari (fansubbed), and now I'm watching Kare Kano on DVD.

I just finished up Spice and Wolf, and am waiting for the new anime season to start up. I wouldn't mind trying out one of the new GONZO shows, just to see how this whole Crunchyroll/BOST/YouTube business works. If one or both of the shows is good, so be it.

I'm also kinda-sorta interested in Wagaya no Oinari-sama, because the original novels it's based on won a higher prize in the same novel competition that the Spice and Wolf novels won in. However, it does look like a genre I'd like a bit less than S&W... Maybe Library War might be worth checking out, too, since Production I.G. rarely puts out anything outright bad.

Oh, and I'm also just starting to watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and on-and-off re-watching Cowboy Bebop. I'm contemplating re-watching Utena as well, thanks to our forum thread. ^^

Just finished watching Season 1 of Gundam 00, which was I found absolutely amazing. Watched ep.1 of Bus Gamer a couple days back and it seems like it could be interesting. I've been finding I've been watching less and less recently. Hopefully I'll find some good ones to watch this season. Don't know what but didn't find much to watch last season. If you have any suggestions let me know I'm always looking for something good to watch.

Need to finish watching Legend of Galactic Heroes (stalled somewhere around ep 90)

I'll just list my favorite anime.

    Revolutionary Girl Utena.
    Serial Experiments: Lain.
    Death Note.
Strawberry Panic (I don't know why either.)
    NANA.
    Evangelion.
    Eureka Seven
    Mai-hime,
    Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei.

That should give you a sense of what I like.
  1.
I'm re-watching Code Geass in celebration of the new R2 series coming out Sunday. ^^
  2.
Well, for me I'm watching the 14th episode of Death Note.

Just watched the first episode of The Tower of Druaga -the Aegis of Uruk, and while it's not the greatest thing ever, the humour in it was quite good. Favourite bits included the "So-and-so is now dead" captions, the pseudo-tentacle-rape scene, the Black/Dark Knight, and the Gurren Lagann parody. XD

As soon as Crunchyroll gets their PayPal working again, I fully intend to pay for a higher quality download of that episode, if only to show my support this new model of distribution. I'll probably end up paying all the way through for whichever of these GONZO series ends up being more enjoyable (Druaga or Blassreiter).

I tried watching 00 but couldn't get through the first episode. Does it pick up afterwards ?

I'm currently re-watching Neon Genesis Evangelion and Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th M.S. Team. Those are two of my favorite series of all time!

As far as I know (thanks to AWO), Gundam series have a history of slow, kinda boring exposition for up to 13 episodes, and then a sudden upswing into awesome after the exposition episodes are done. I'm guessing the same is true of 00, based on what I've heard.

Quick impressions of some first episodes of the new season.

Allison and Lillia: Bright colours, simple character designs, a Dog of Flanders-eqsue setting, and biplanes. Pretty damn good overall, but there was an intangible... something missing. I think it was to do with the fact that Allison just hardly ever stopped got-damn smiling. Overall, she felt more like an incomplete template for "spunky tomboy" than an actual character. Hopefully we get to see more depth for her as the series goes on.

Wagaya no Oinari-sama: I've seen a couple blogs criticize this episode as being unbearably slow. I don't know where they got that impression - I only felt it to be a little slow in a few parts. Most of the perceived slowness probably comes from the fact that most of this episode is just talking, but the talking covered a fair amount of exposition and was decently written, so I didn't mind that at all. I especially liked listening to Tenko Kuugen's dialogue, both for the writing and the voice performance. The dual male-female effect in fox form was simple, but it worked, and in female form, Yukana did a great job making Tenko sound self-assured and badass. :) The only parts that worry me are Kou (the token tsundere), and the sharp turn to wacky comedy at the very end of the episode. There was pretty much one funny part in that comedy sequence, and that was Kou riding in the luggage rack.

Kamen no Maid Guy: I'm not sure what to think about this one. Ridiculously muscled and burly guy in maid costume ++! :D Constant molestation jokes - -! :( Naeka's not a bad lead female, despite all the cleavage and panty shots she's subjected to. I am also strangely drawn to Fubuki, the more traditional anime maid (who seems to have borrowed Dokuro-chan's tactics for dealing with people). And I can understand that the Maid Guy's perviness is mainly due to a lack of knowledge about what "perverted" actually means, but... ugh, that scene where he slits the front of Naeka's clothes open and pokes around in her breasts and bra really rubbed me the wrong way (pun not intentional). Maybe I'll give it another episode or two to see if that unsettling feeling gets stronger or weaker.

Still want to check out Kurenai, Golgo 13, Library War, and Vampire Knight. Possibly might check out Soul Eater and Nabari no Ou.

EDIT: Also, second episode of Druaga!

Second episode was a bit of a let-down, with a more standard fantasy plot and almost no humour whatsoever. Still fairly enjoyable, though (save for the unbelievably cliched "oh noes! the king's assassin got away, and now the guards have caught our hero in the worst possible position by the bloody corpse!" bit at the end). Jil's not a bad male lead; far from the most interesting guy ever, but serviceable. I'm digging the character designs and voice cast all around. And I'm actually fairly impressed at how they've managed to rationalize a classic multi-floor video game dungeon into a real fantasy plot. The plot itself... nyegh, it's GONZO. Not the best track record for plot. But I'm willing to give it a chance. I'll at least follow this for a few more episodes, if only to pay for the high quality downloads.

I just picked up a set of the Essential Anime versions of the Bubblegum Crisis 2040 DVDs at Otafest this past weekend. I got a pretty decent deal on the series, I think, at $60. The Essential Anime DVDs have been out of print for a while, and I usually see the Perfect Collection priced at $80-90, even online.

Anyway, interesting tidbit: BGC:2040 was the first licensed anime I ever saw subtitled.~* I loved it for its characters, hardsuit designs, music, and action scenes. The opening theme, "Y'know," as corny a rock/techno song as it is, still ranks high among my favourite anime songs. And yes, I'm well aware that I'm one of, like, three people in the world who actually really likes this version of BGC.

However, I only ever made it to episode 8 of the series because that was all my local video store carried (the first three subbed VHS tapes). Ever since then, I've been wanting to see the rest of the series, but it became a surprisingly hard anime to find (at least for a decent price, anyway). I would sometimes see random volumes at HMV, but never a full set, which was what I wanted.

Er, yeah. So. I'm watching Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040. What of it, foo'?

(~* - For anyone who's curious, the first anime I saw subtitled period was Sailor Stars. I bought all 9 VHS volumes of that plus the tape of Ami-chan no Hatsukoi/the SuperS TV Specials straight from VKLL. Picked them up at his house, actually, because he happened to live in the same city.)

Good to hear I'm not alone on that one. :) I'm hoping that after Fast Karate finishes up their reviews of the episodes of the original Bubblegum Crisis that they eventually review 2040. Considering their opinions of the original, I have absolutely no idea how they would review 2040. XD

I'm now re-watching the X TV series and marvelling at how good it still is, even now that I'm more disillusioned with CLAMP stuff. Makes me appreciate their older works all the more. :)

Also, finished up Princess Tutu. Marvelous stuff! Just a wonderful series all around.

I don't know about the anime, as I've only seen up to episode 8. The Death Note manga, however, lives up to the hype until volume 7. After that, it's a slow downward plunge into extreme WTF territory. The ending is still not bad, but everything from volumes 8-12 is just not as clever or high quality as the things that came before.

Urk, I'd say go for the anime version of Jigoku Shoujo instead. The anime is pretty okay, and quite good in the second half of the series, but the manga is utter crap. It looks like it's trying to be similar to something Arina Tanemura would draw, but the story just doesn't mesh with that drawing style at all. That, and the telling of the story itself is quite sloppy and boring compared to the more methodical, dark methods the anime uses.

Neither incarnation of Jigoku Shoujo is truly great, but the anime certainly does win out as the superior one to me. And at least neither one of those is the awful live-action drama version. D:

Spice and Wolf is pretty decent. It can be a little boring sometimes if you're not interested in the economic aspects of the series, but the two main characters are good, especially Holo. :)
