Well (two of) you asked for it, so here it is: a thread where I can keep telling you guys what kind of gotdamn anime music you should be listening to. ;) Think of it as a continuation of Anime Utahime. Except without sound. Or requests.
The way this will work is that with each new post, I will recommend several different types of anisongs. The format will go as follows:
Bleeding Edge: A song that has been released within the last 30 days. Scar Tissue: A song that is over ten years old. Upbeat: A song that's designed to make you happy and/or dance-y. Action: A song that gets the blood pumpin'. Slow: A song that's very nice and slow, be it either sad, romantic, or just relaxing. Fuckin' Obscure: A song that I consider to be obscure and deserving of more exposure. Miscellaneous: Any number of other songs that I want to recommend at the time for no particular reason.
First set of recs will be done in the next post. I just have to get them together, first. :)
A'ighty, anime music recs for Friday, September 12:
Bleeding Edge: "Let's Go Together" by Afromania; ending for Birdy the Mighty: Decode [If you liked the second ending of Gurren Lagann, this is more feel-good awesome from Afromania. Gains extra hop-step-yay! points if you watch the ending animation; you won't be able to get that skipping guy out of your head while listening.]
Scar Tissue: "Kanashimi yo Konnichiwa" by Yuki Saitou; first opening for Maison Ikkoku. [Classic, and I smiled when it came up on shuffle recently. ^^]
Upbeat: "Guns & Roses" by Paradise Lunch; opening for Baccano! [I just started watching Baccano! recently, and it's awesome. :3 I don't care what Graeme says: this is a super-cool, wonderfully jazzy/big band song. It always makes me feel good to watch that opener.]
Action: "Futari no Kamui, Futatsu no Shinken" by Naoki Sato; background music for X: TV [I don't recommend BGM all that often, but I just found my copy of X OST 1, and this was always one of my favourite tracks on the album. I tend to get chills up my spine listening to the action-y part of this song. :o It's also a good OST overall. You should get it.]
Slow: "Aimo" by Megumi "Ranka Lee" Nakajima; insert song for Macross Frontier [Have also finally started watching Macross Frontier recently, and very much dig this lullaby the same way I like "Sora" from the Escaflowne movie. It's an instantly memorable song, and very lovely.]
Fuckin' Obscure: "Happy Flower" by Saori Nara; second opening for Daa! Daa! Daa! [You all know my love of cute music very well, and this is one cute song that I had been meaning to play on Utahime proper for a long time. Daa! Daa! Daa! in general is a very sweet and vastly underappreciated comedy, and the second opener is adorable both to listen to and and to watch. :3]
Miscellaneous: - "Fairy Girl ~ Yumemiru Yousei" by Mamiko Noto; character song for Zero wo Tsukaima ~ Princess no Rondo [Oh shut up. I hate Zero wo Tsukaima, but I like Mamiko Noto a lot. ;P] - "Hatena de Wasshoi" by Kaori Mizuhashi & Yuuko Gotou & Kana Asumi & Ryoko Shintani; opening for Hidamari Sketch x 360 [Haaa-te ha-te ha-te ha-te haaaa-tenaaaa... <3] - "Boat House" by The Pillows; opening for Moonlight Mile 2 [Yay, new Pillows!] - "Eternal Blaze" by Nana Mizuki; opening for Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's [Just finished this series a few days ago (which was surprisingly very good). This opener was even better than the first season's. Woo Nana! :3] - The entire 10th disc of the new Utena anniversary CD box set, called Utena in the Club. [Jeebus is this CD awesome. Seriously. "Bossa Nova Zettai Unmei Mokushiroku" alone is worth getting it for. o_o]
Yeah, they just released a 10th anniversary CD boxset containing every Utena OST ever released (including the elusive OSTs 5 and 6). It includes a super-special-awesome bonus disc comprised of Utena tracks remixed by Ikuhara himself. It was Ikuhara's idea to call that disc "Utena in the Club."
The CD boxset is just one exciting new Utena thing being released as of late. Soon to come is the first of two DVD sets of the anime completely remastered (and in some instances, some glaring animation mistakes have been fixed too, I think). The only thing that sucks about this is that together, the two DVD sets will cost about $600. x_x The CD box is more reasonably priced, thankfully.
Yeah, you'd think! Even though I think it's a great thing to remaster Utena, I wouldn't pay 600-fucking-dollars for that. o_o
Thankfully, some people at the IRG forum have decided to bite the bullet and buy the sets so that they can rip the fuck out of them and then put them on the BitTorrents for everyone to enjoy. They'd be raw, but I've seen the series so many times with subs that that doesn't matter to me. XD
Bleeding Edge: "Sora iro Days feat. 8bit Project -spiral chiptune mix-" by Shoko Nakagawa; new remix of the opening for Gurren Lagann [This came on "Tsuzuku Sekai", the single for the Gurren Lagann movie. This is just BEGGING for someone to make an 8-bit Flash version of the TV series' opening sequence.]
Scar Tissue: "Ochanoko Saisai Hengen Jizai" by Seki Tomokazu; Chichiri character song from Fushigi Yuugi. [FY is veeeeeeeeeeeeeeery far from being the best series ever, but I have a soft spot for the character songs from the series. That's mainly because the Character Vocal Memories CD was one of the first anime CDs I ever purchased. XD;; This song in particular is a great presentation of Chichiri's adorable side. ...Shut up! .............na no da. *is shot*]
Upbeat: "Balalaika" by Kusumi Koharu; second opening for Kirarin Revolution [What can I say. It's very cute. It sounds Russian-inspired. The dance in the PV featuring Kusumi Koharu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8WdHhVU-oE) looks like one I'd like to learn. And it digs its way into your skull with its incessant catchiness! D:]
Action: "For Real" by Tokuyama Hidenori; first opening for Gensoumaden Saiyuki [This came up on shuffle for me twice today, just randomly. And I listened to it all the way through both times, because it's still rockin' good after all these years. ;)]
Slow: "Ame" by Akira Sudou; insert song for Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 [Featured for far too little time on-screen in the actual series. It's lovely. Have a listen.]
Fuckin' Obscure: "Ne" by Rooky; opening for Super Doll Licca-chan [Somewhat more standard 90s opening fare, but I've always liked this song nonetheless, especially the chorus. :)]
Miscellaneous: - "Natsu no Hana" by JUJU; ending for Mononoke [Not too remarkable, really, but I had it running through my head today for whatever reason. It's nice. :)] - "Lion" by May'n and Megumi Nakajima; second opening for Macross Frontier [This song's already got a lot of exposure, but for a good reason: it's awesome. ^^] - "Zouo" by Emi Shinohara; Ophelia character song for Claymore [Going to be listening to this song a lot while I do up my Ophelia character application for Landel's Damned. Good thing Emi Shinohara has a pretty good singing voice. ^^ The song itself is decent, too.]
No set schedule for updates to this thread, BTW. I'll just update it whenever I feel like it.
Man. Last night, I listened to "Balalaika" by Kusumi Koharu and I was scared half to death by all the yellow she has on. In the morning, when I woke up, that song got stuck on my head for half a day. ><; Well, until I listened to the cake song and chocolate song to stop the song. Anyone with some knowledge of the Japanese and/or Chinese language can figure out which song I was referring to when I said "cake song." Anyone wanna guess? Hint: It is an ending song of an anime.
Ha ha, I have spread the infectiousness of "Balalaika" at least a little bit! Success! XD
Thanks for reminding me about this thread. Haven't updated it in a while, I guess. ^^; Here would be an update, then!
Anime music recs for Monday, March 9:
Bleeding Edge: "Hanaji" by Yuu Kobayashi; opening for Maria Holic [Best described as CRAZY. This song works better if you see the opening animation that goes with it, which is a signature SHAFT + Akiyuki Shinbo sequence of awesome in the vein of Zetsubou Sensei and Negima?! Either way, while maybe not an objectively good song (I like it, at least), it's one of the most unique-sounding songs of the season, and will worm its way into your head whether you like it or not.]
Scar Tissue: "Bryger" by Franco Martin; Italian opening to Gingasenpuu Braiger. [I don't normally recommend foreign variants of anime songs, but I randomly found this one on a forum and found it to be quite catchy. XD If you can't find the MP3, then you can see the opening sequence on YouTube here.]
Upbeat: "Motto * Hade ni ne!" by Haruka Tomatsu; opening for Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens [A perfect example of what a good opening sequence can do for a song. When I first got this song, I found it a decent, if unremarkable upbeat song and I couldn't remember what it sounded like when I thought about it. Then I went to YouTube to check out the opening animation that went with it, and BOOM, song is instantly memorable and cute and awesome. o_o And all it took was some chick with blue hair dancing around with a microphone. Watch the opening here and see what you think.]
Action: "Alsatia" by Galneryus; opening for RIN ~ Daughters of Mnemosyne [Love or hate the show, the opening is pretty rockin'. Gotta love that main guitar riff. The lyrics are unintelligible when sung by the lead vocalist, and still awesomely nonsensical if you actually read what they're supposed to be. XD]
Slow: "Nemureru Hoshi no Aoi Suna" by Mayumi Iizuka; second ending for Shikabane Hime: Aka [Simple, but I like the childlike vocalist and the piano and string instrumentation. I don't know what context it appears in during the show, having not seen it, but it sounds like it could be an effectively moving piece.]
Fuckin' Obscure: "Mokona's Garden" by Yuri Shiratori; Mokona character song for the Rayearth OVA [Ever wanted to hear a song sung completely by Mokona? Wish no more, for one exists! :D I couldn't find out what the real title of this song was for the longest time because I was looking for it on the Magic Knight Rayearth TV CDs without realizing it was an OVA song. XD;; So even if it's not so obscure for you guys, locating its real title and origin felt like searching for an obscure song for me, so there.]
Miscellaneous: - "Shinai" by Nana Mizuki; opening for White Album [More Nana Mizuki never hurt anyone. :3] - "Carnival Babel" by Takada Band; opening for Blue Seed [A 90s classic theme that I recently rediscovered.] - "Kamui no Ken" by Noriko Watanabe; ending for Dagger of Kamui [This was getting stuck in my head a lot a few weeks ago for whatever reason. o.o It's a nice song, definitely, with a more Eastern flavour and some rock-ish parts.] - "Koyoi, Tsuki ga Miezutomo" by Porno Graffitti; ending for Bleach Movie 3 [Just a really good new song for Porno Graffitti. I've been hurting for some new anime-related content from them for a little bit. ^^] - "Mad Machine" by Kinuko Oomori; second opening for Bubblegum Crisis [Do I really need a reason to recommend BGC music? ;)]
Sweet. lol I can imagine Konata song singing that song, "Hanaji" by Yuu Kobayashi, at the karaoke booth. The singer's pitch goes everywhere. Either that, or the song is making my head spin. I'm betting this will be the perfect karaoke song for you to sing at a con. j/k XD
XD Hmmmm. After hearing it. About 10 times in a row. -_-; Yes. I got into another Eryn's mine again. [Admin Note: I don't understand waht you were trying to say here. Please be clearer about what you want to say.] XD; Curses! Anyways, as I was saying, after hearing it so many times, feels like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei ending mix the mixed with Galaxy Angel.
